The ID 2004 includes the new Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004 (IMD 2004). This is a nationally recognised measure of deprivation at the small area level. The model is based on the premise that multiple deprivation is made up of separate dimensions, or ‘domains’, all of which can be individually measured and which reflect different aspects of deprivation.
The Indices are no longer based on wards and instead use smaller geographical areas called Super-Output Areas (SOAs) based on analysis from the 2001 Census. The lower-level SOAs used in the Index typically comprise of a population of approximately 1,500 people. One of the benefits of the new Index is that deprivation is now measured at a more localised level compared to the ward-level based approach of IMD 2000. This means that ‘pockets’ of extreme deprivation previously ‘masked’ by the relative affluence of other areas within the same ward are now better highlighted.
The Index ranks all of the SOAs in England based upon their scores generated from a number of different indicators. A ranking of 1 represents the most deprived SOA nationally and a ranking of 32,482 represents the least deprived SOA nationally. The ranks allow direct comparison between other SOAs across the whole of England. Summary measures are also available at district and county level.
Worcestershire is ranked 117th (in terms of average rank over all domains) out of the 149 counties in England. Overall, just 5 out of 361 Super Output Areas (SOAs) in Worcestershire lie inside the top 10% most deprived SOAs nationally, that is 1.4% of SOAs in Worcestershire.
