Blackstone Picnic Place
A footpath links directly from the car park to the river path, running parallel with, but away from, the busy road. It is a good place to join other routes including the Stourport Circular, the North Worcestershire Path and the Severn Way, to explore the wider countryside.
Admire the rock houses with their little door and windows. It is not hard to imagine a hermit walking out of the door and down to the river to bathe or collect water. The soft red sandstone was an ideal material for carving homes into the rock. This is a good example of many in the Wyre Forest area.
Look out for the purple haze of the Rosebay Willowherb around this area in summer. This wildflower used to be a fairly rare woodland plant. Each plant produces up to 80,000 seeds, and it colour now brightens up roadsides, car parks and wasteground.
