Population Population

Population Statistics

The R&I Unit holds information on the population of Worcestershire. In addition to the census material released every 10 years, ONS release annual mid-year estimates for Worcestershire and the six districts therein. These mid-year estimates are split here into gender and 5 year age groups.

Population statistics for Worcestershire and each of the districts are available here, as well as population figures for smaller areas, such as the wards and the main towns within Worcestershire.

Statistics on population by ethnic group for Worcestershire and the districts are also available via the link.

Population Projections

The R&I Unit also produce population projections for Worcestershire and the 6 districts. These projections are based on information obtained from ONS on births and deaths, as well as migration statistics. The Unit uses Popgroup to obtain projections up to the year 2021.

Recent trends for Worcestershire show that the county has been gaining population, at an average rate of over 2,100 per annum. The majority of this increase is due to net migration into the county, with the increase in natural change in comparison quite small.

The largest population increases have been seen in Bromsgrove and Wychavon due to the high level of net migration into these districts. The more urban districts of Redditch and Worcester City have in recent times tended to have a small net out-migration, but do register a small increase of population due to a higher number of births compared to the number of deaths.

Further details on migration were available from the 2001 Census, which showed numbers of people moving into and out of the area during the previous year. This information is shown below for Worcestershire and the districts.

Migration

Official figures for internal and interational migration are received from ONS annually. International migration is migration to and from areas within the UK, and international migration is to and from areas overseas.

Emerging Communities

The population of Worcestershire is diverse.  While some communities are well established, others, for example people who came to the UK after the Accession 8 countries (Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary) joined the European Union in May 2004, will be newer.

It is essential that we have a sound understanding of all of our communities and their needs, to ensure that we, and partners, are able to provide appropriate advice and support to all who need it.
